What is rivalta test?

Rivalta test is a simple and rapid diagnostic test used to determine the presence of protein in a fluid sample. This test is commonly used in medical practice to detect conditions such as meningitis, peritonitis, and endometritis. The test involves adding a few drops of acetic acid to the fluid sample, followed by the addition of a few drops of sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. If the protein is present in the sample, it will denature and precipitate. The presence of protein indicates inflammation or infection, and a positive Rivalta test indicates the need for further investigation and treatment. The test is easy to perform, requires no special equipment, and can be done at the patient's bedside. A negative Rivalta test result indicates that there is no protein present in the fluid sample, and the absence of protein generally indicates that there is no inflammation or infection.
